Global Reach

Sims Metal’s operations buy and process end-of-life metal and electronic materials, which are then sold as raw materials to steel mills and secondary smelters.

The company’s geographically diverse operations span across North America, Australasia and the United Kingdom, comprising an integrated network ranging from small yards to large multi-modal facilities with deep-water port access.

Our facilities are capable of handling a wide variety of ferrous and nonferrous metals, combined with years of experience to handle any job for your business. We service accounts nationally and internationally, and buy material from scrap metal dealers throughout the world.

More About Our History

Health and Safety

Health and safety are our utmost priorities – this is non-negotiable and there are no exceptions.

The safety and wellbeing of our staff, contractors and visitors is paramount. To ensure that we meet our high health and safety standards, we have a comprehensive and exhaustive health and safety policy endorsed by our Board of Directors.

Each operating division has its own committee, which monitors incidents, provides direction and works in conjunction with OH&S professionals. Every health and safety incident, no matter how large or small, is recorded within our comprehensive safety system. This allows us to analyse the possible causes of incidents and implement mitigation strategies to ensure that they are not repeated.

Health and safety is everybody’s business at Sims Metal – it is a shared responsibility. Initiatives undertaken include peer-to-peer observational behaviour audits, continuous risk assessments, initial staff induction and ongoing Health and Safety training. We have also recently engaged DuPont Safety Resources to conduct an extensive review of our OH&S practices.

Our Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate – which is the number of lost time injuries recorded multiplied by one million and divided by the number of hours worked – for the Group dropped to 1.3 in fiscal year 2017, a 38% decrease from 2016, making fiscal year 2017 our safest year ever.

Sustainability at Sims Limited

Community Involvement

Sims Metal is committed to the community, supporting local educators, schools, charities, and community and environmental organizations throughout the world.

In fact, many of our employees live in the communities in which we are located, and our commitment to being a good neighbor shows through their actions. Whether it is organizing the local e-cycle event, giving out water on a hot day to parade-goers, or even giving school supplies to the local elementary school, Sims Metal is dedicated to actively improving the local community.

Environmental Stewardship

Sims Limited’s businesses are fully aligned with – and are in fact helping to drive – tomorrow’s “circular economy”. As an alternative to the traditional linear economy (make, use, dispose), the idea of the circular economy is to keep resources in use for as long as possible; extract the maximum value from those resources while in use; and then recover and regenerate products and materials at the end of their useful life.

In fiscal 2017, our carbon footprint was 176,185 tonnes, a reduction of 6% on our fiscal year 2016. In addition, Sims Limited has had a comprehensive environmental audit programme in place since 1991. Our internally developed intranet-based audit system has been widely recognised as being ‘beyond best practice,’ and allows our environmental progress to be tracked continuously.
