Community
Sims Metal Management makes a conscious effort to be a good neighbor wherever we operate. We believe that an open dialogue between our people and our neighbors highlights the economic improvement and the benefits recycling and Sims Metal Management have to offer communities throughout the World.
During Fiscal Year 2008, Sims Metal Management handled a total of more than 11 million tonnes of steel scrap material. The use of this recycled raw material by steel mills around the world avoided the emission of 23.5 million tonnes of CO2 to the atmosphere when compared with the use of virgin ore, which is equivalent to avoiding the burning of 62 million barrels of oil.
Steel is by far North America’s most recycled material. In fact, an entire type of steel processing – electric arc furnace – has been developed to use recycled steel and iron in the manufacture of products of the future. Steel has no memory, so it can be consistently and easily recycled with little or no loss in quality.
This strong commitment to our ideals is often shown through our employees’ actions. Whether it is organizing the local ecycle event, giving out water on a hot day to parade goers, or even giving school supplies to the local elementary school, Sims Metal Management is actively improving the local social environment while at the same time conserving the Planet’s natural resources.
At our core we are all environmentalists, but even more so, we are your neighbors.
