Project Status of the Sunset Park MRF
Construction underway: Design work for critical elements of the facility is now completed. We are pleased to report the following:
- The NYC Public Design Commission selected our project for an award for Excellence in Design. From the beginning, it has been our intention to not only build a state-of-the-art recycling facility, but to incorporate a wide range of other sustainable features into our design, and to build a facility that makes a positive visual contribution to the Brooklyn waterfront.
- We have selected Skanska USA to be the construction management firm for the project. Skanska is a global construction company with a long history of successfully managing many important projects in NYC and Brooklyn, including Brooklyn Bridge Park (currently underway), several ferry terminals, portions of the Hudson River Park and the Brooklyn Children’s Museum. We are confident Skanska will manage our project in a highly professional manner, ensuring a safe work environment and strict adherence to all environmental and other workplace regulations.
- We have purchased the large buildings that will house all recycling operations from Nucor. Nucor steel buildings are made here in the US from recycled steel (more than 80% recycled content).
- Construction commenced in late August/September 2010. We are currently in the process of finishing foundation work and erecting the buildings that will house the process facility or Materials Recycling Facility. Click here to see video of the ground breaking.
Now that we are in the construction phase, we expect to send out more regular updates to all those who are interested in our progress.
