Commitment to Sustainability
Sims Metal Management (SimsMM) is the world’s leading listed metal and electronics recycling company. Our recycling efforts deliver significant environmental benefits, including:
- preserving natural resources
- reducing landfill usage
- reducing waste generations
- reducing water and energy consumption and the associated carbon profile
SimsMM measures and reports several metrics related to sustainability in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the world’s most widely used sustainability reporting framework. Energy use, CO2 emissions, water consumption and waste generation are measured in addition to corporate governance, OH&S, environment and diversity. SimsMM continues to develop initiatives that improve performance in all these areas, and integrate those into operational and financial outcomes.
Dow Jones Sustainability Index
SimsMM started reporting under the Global Dow Jones Sustainability Index in 2008. We were honored to join as an Index Component in their World Index for the first time in 2012. Examining not just energy and carbon aspects, but rating all sustainability parameters it is a comprehensive assessment of all a company’s credentials. Consequently, it was pleasing that SimsMM topped several assessment categories including Governance, Social, Environmental Reporting, Climate Strategy, and Human Capital as well as Talent Attraction and Retention.
We work closely with many institutional investment entities, banks and research organizations who appreciate the link that managing sustainability brings to reduction of operational risk. In addition, many of our clients are able to leverage our sustainability credentials to bolster their supply chain performance.
